Running to Lose Weight

When most people start to think about how to lose weight they think its time to start running. Running is an extremely efficient way to burn calories and lose weight. Here at we agree running is without doubt the best cardiovascular training we can recommend. Running in the Sauna Suit combined with a balanced healthy diet will produce weight loss results.

Running helps you to lose body fat in three ways:

  1. You will burn more energy while you are running

    About 100 calories for every mile you jog or run, even more wearing the Sauna Suit!

  2. You will raise your basic metabolic rate

    This will mean that you burn more energy even when you are not exercising. (This effect is most pronounced if you run at least 4 times a week for at least half an hour).

  3. You will increase your quantity of lean muscle tissue

    Lean muscle burns more calories.

Healthy Eating is the First Step

Regular Exercise in the Sauna Suit and a Healthy Balanced Diet - One without the other will not enable you to reach your weight loss goals.

Please remember you will only lose weight if you burn more calories than you consume. One common mistake is that people can overcompensate running or any regular exercise by consuming extra calories from food and drink. Individuals find it easier to justify having a cake or chocolate bar because they went for a run that morning but maintaining a healthy eating diet and regular exercise is essential. Now we donít expect you to never have a treat but all in moderation and at the same time itís no good going on a crash diet. By crash dieting you will not have the energy and nutrients needed for your running.

Where to begin

Before you set off on your first run there is a checklist that needs to be addressed:

  1. Health Check

    Consult your doctor or healthcare provider to ensure you are fit and able to run.

  2. Running Shoes

    We recommend purchasing a pair of running shoes. Locate a store in your area that specializes in running shoes. A good pair of running shoes can prevent injury and increase stability and comfort for the foot.

  3. Purchase your Sauna Suit

    Running in your Sauna Suit will increase the amount of calories burned during your run.

Running Step by Step

As mentioned in our Getting Started with Exercise article itís important to take running in gradual steps in raising distance and intensity. Many people who begin running set unrealistic distances and start too fast. Their bodies are unable to deal with the intensity and people can become discouraged with running. You need to set out a basic running regime that sets out realistic targets. Record your exercise so you can look back to chart your progress with distance, time and regularity of runs.

Always warm up before running and cool down after, check out our Warm Up and Cool Down section for information. To begin we recommend a run in the Sauna Suit of around 20-30 minutes, three times a week. Space out the three sessions over the week to give your body time to rest and recover. After a few weeks you will notice an improvement in your performance, now you can start to look at increasing distance and time. Donít over do it, use your own body as a guide to what you can run.

Getting Serious but Having Fun

Joining a running club can be great fun, most towns or cities will have an established running club where you can meet with other members for runs and social events.

Once you reach a certain level of running fitness in the Sauna Suit you can now start to look at signing up for some races. Start by entering a 5km or 10km race, they have a fun element to them so are not too intimidating. You can now start competing in beating your personal best times whilst also raising money for charity. Eventually you may even reach to ultimate goal of running a marathon! Running in races really gives you that chance to prove to yourself and others that all the hard training does not only result in weight loss and wellbeing but a greater sense of achievement.
